Fe:ZnSe (iron-doped zinc selenide) is a highly effective mid-infrared laser crystal with a high absorption coefficient and broad gain bandwidth, capable of efficient pumping around 3 μm and tunable emission across roughly 3.4–5.2 μm, making it widely used in compact laser systems, optical parametric oscillators, spectroscopy, and medical or sensing applications, while also serving as a saturable absorber for passive Q-switching and operating efficiently even at room temperature despite its relatively short excited-state lifetime requiring short pump pulses.
